How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can activate spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different pins for the connector and they perform different functions but the most effective method of testing it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when the sensor is in full operation. If you are having problems with this part, check for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll i had an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are not firing anymore. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. I put a piece of tissue over each injector Audi Q7 Key hole and when i turn the engine on without sparks, audi Q7 key the three with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is plugged in, but still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is easy to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to know the position and speed the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you encounter a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause an engine shutdown.

Some of the signs of a failed G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or misfiring when you are in gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is likely that your sensor is failing and should be replaced. They are cheap and easy-to-find particularly in the case of a Bosch model like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this unit is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the cause of many issues in your car. It's a crucial component of the transmission in your audi q7 key since it sends information to the ECU on how fast or slow the engine of the car is turning. When this sensor fails, it could disrupt the performance of the transmission and the rest of the car's components.
