How to Replace an Audi A1 keys, review, G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU via the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

Nissan-New.pngThe sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or Audi A1 Keys a jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. However the code will not appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky since there are two connector pins, and they perform different functions but the best method of testing it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading approximately 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this part, check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge reduction in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched in gazoline, the fourth one was dry. I placed a tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine without sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start if the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is connected but it still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, but i believe that i've ruled out everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a junkyard or at a parts store. It is simple to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing up). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make a decision about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. In order to do this it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28).
