Apple introduced its first iPad in 2010, and since then it is the name that first comes to mind of any user from any country in the world when trying to find an association to the concept of a tablet computer. We think of a tablet, and the iPad immediately comes to mind, even if we are an ardent fan of Samsung or Microsoft products. In this material - the history of iPad development from 2010 to 2024.

How to know the version of iPad by model number?

In order to find out the model number there are two ways.

Method 1. iPad model number is printed in small print on the back of the tablet.

Method 2 . Launch the "Settings" application and go to the path: "Basic" → "About this device".

Find the "Model Number" line at the top of the screen. Tap on the part number - the identifier containing a slash "/", (e.g. MR7G2FD/A).

The model number will appear, consisting of a letter and four digits without the slash (e.g., A1893).

You can match your iPad model to its trade name by looking at all of the Apple tablet model numbers below in ascending order (from oldest to most recent).

First iPad, 2010

  • Screen : 9.7 in;
  • Processor : Apple A4;
  • Memory : 16GB, 32GB, 64GB;
  • Colors : silver back panel, black front panel;
  • Model numbers : A1219 (Wi-Fi) and A1337 (Wi-Fi + Cellular);
  • Connector : Apple 30-pin.

The idea of creating a tablet was born by Steve Jobs in the middle of the "noughties", but the busyness of Apple engineers projects iPod Touch and iPhone allowed to start its realization and release the finished device only by 2010. Thus appeared the first iPad - an intermediate between a laptop and a smartphone, with a multitouch screen with a diagonal of 9.7 inches and a resolution of 1028 × 768 pixels (132 ppi).

The first iPad had a single-core 1GHz Apple A4 processor and 256MB of RAM, which looks pretty sad by today's standards. The tablet had no camera at all, although the iOS 4 supported by it already provided the possibility to make video calls via FaceTime.

The first iPad supported microSIM-card.

iPad 2, 2011

  • Screen : 9.7 in;
  • Processor : Apple A5;
  • Memory : 16GB, 32GB, 64GB;
  • Colors : Silver back panel, black or white front panel;
  • Model numbers : A1395 (Wi-Fi), A1396 (Wi-Fi + Cellular), A1397 (Wi-Fi + CDMA);
  • Connector : Apple 30-pin.

So, even for the level of technology development at the end of 2010, the first Apple tablet characteristics, to put it mildly, did not impress. But already in March 2011 Apple presented a new version of iPad, in the description of which you can find a lot of numbers "2". The iPad 2 processor became 2-core, RAM was installed 2 times more (512 MB), there were 2 cameras with a resolution of 0.3 and 0.7 megapixels. In addition, Cellular models now supported the more popular MicroSIM cards, instead of bulky standard ones.

In 2012, Apple also released a modified version of the iPad 2 with improved battery life, which was achieved through an improved Apple A5 processor (made using 32nm process technology) and a larger battery.

iPad 3, early 2012

  • Screen : 9.7 in;
  • Processor : - Apple A5X;
  • Memory : 16GB, 32GB, 64GB;
  • Colors : Silver back panel, black or white front panel;
  • Model numbers : A1416 (Wi-Fi), A1430 (Wi-Fi + Cellular), A1403 (Wi-Fi + Cellular, for Verizon subscribers only);
  • Connector : Apple 30-pin.

The main innovation of iPad 3 was Retina-display with a resolution of 2048 × 1536 pixels, which provided twice the picture quality - 264 dots per square inch against 132 dots in previous models. In addition, instead of a useless 0.7-megapixel main camera iPad 3 was equipped with a competitive optical module iSight with a matrix of 5 megapixels. Processor Apple A5X had the same two cores and clock speed of 1 GHz, but the capacity of the RAM module again doubled, up to 1 GB.

iPad 4, late 2012

  • Screen : 9.7 in;
  • Processor : Apple A6X;
  • Memory : 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, 128GB;
  • Colors : Silver back panel, black or white front panel;
  • Model numbers : A1458 (Wi-Fi), A1459( Wi-Fi + Cellular), A1460 (Wi-Fi + Cellular, MM (multi-mode));
  • Connector : Lightning.

Six months later, in October 2012, the lineup of Apple tablets received another update. The main thing, in terms of the evolution of the lineup, was the appearance in the new iPad 8-pin Lightning port (previously used a wide 30-pin), which is used for charging and synchronization of iOS-devices to this day. In addition, iPad 4 was equipped with a faster Apple A6X processor and graphics core PowerVR SGX554MP4, as well as installed front FaceTime camera with a matrix of 1.2 megapixels. In February 2013, the iPad 4 with 128GB of internal storage was released.

iPad mini 1, late 2012

  • Screen : 7.9 inches;
  • Processor : Apple A5;
  • Memory : 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB;
  • Colors : Silver or gray back panel, black or white front panel;
  • Model numbers : A1432 (Wi-Fi), A1454 (Wi-Fi + Cellular), A1455 (Wi-Fi + Cellular, (multi-mode));
  • Connector : Lightning.

The first "mini" was another middle ground between a smartphone and a full-size tablet PC. iPad mini with a screen diagonal of 7.9 inches received a resolution of 1024 × 768 pixels (which corresponds to 163 ppi), as well as a rather outdated at that time Apple A5 processor. The device's compactness was ensured by narrowed side bezels, and the volume rocker split into two standalone buttons.

iPad Air 1, 2013

  • Screen : 9.7 in;
  • Processor : Apple A7;
  • Memory : 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB;
  • Colors : Silver back panel or space gray, black or white front panel;
  • Model numbers : A1474 (Wi-Fi), A1475 (Wi-Fi + Cellular), A1476 (Wi-Fi + Cellular, TD-LTE);
  • Connector : Lightning.

The "airy" name of the iPad Air, introduced in October 2013, was explained by the compactness and lightness of the device - it became 2 mm thinner, as much as 16 mm narrower and almost 30% lighter than the previous model. Following the iPhone 5s, the new flagship of the tablet line became Apple's second mobile gadget with a 64-bit A7 processor of its own production (compared to the "smartphone" counterpart, it was even overclocked by 0.1 GHz).

iPad mini 2, 2013

  • Screen : 7.9 inches;
  • Processor :Apple A5;
  • Memory : 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB;
  • Colors : Silver or gray back panel, black or white front panel;
  • Model numbers : A1489 (Wi-Fi), A1490 (Wi-Fi + Cellular), A1491 (Wi-Fi + Cellular, TD-LTE));
  • Connector : Lightning.

The iPad mini 2, aka iPad mini with Retina display, was introduced at the same time as the iPad Air on October 22, 2013. It is easy to guess that the main difference from the first mini-model was the high-resolution Retina screen (2048 × 1536 pixels, 326 dots per inch). The compact version of the tablet was also equipped with a 62-bit Apple A7 chip and M7 motion coprocessor, thus putting it on the same shelf as the top gadgets of its time.

iPad Air 2, 2014

  • Screen : 9.7 in;
  • Processor : Apple A8X;
  • Memory : 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB;
  • Colors : silver, gold back panel or space gray, black or white front panel;
  • Model numbers : A1566 (Wi-Fi), A1567 Wi-Fi + Cellular);
  • Connector : Lightning.

With the iPad Air 2, Apple has pioneered the use of the Apple A8X 3-core processor with a decent 1.8GHz clock speed, and increased the RAM to 2GB. In addition, it was decided to abandon the specification with 32 GB of internal memory (later it was added) and implement the expected by many users Touch ID fingerprint scanner, which has passed a year's run-in on the iPhone 5s. Another long-awaited improvement is the upgrade of the iSight main camera sensor to 8 megapixels.

iPad mini 3, 2014

  • Screen : 7.9 inches;
  • Processor :Apple A7;
  • Memory : 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB;
  • Colors : silver, gold back panel or space gray color, black or white front panel;
  • Model numbers : A1599 (Wi-Fi), A1600 (Wi-Fi + Cellular);
  • Connector : Lightning.

iPad mini 3 did not receive a three-core processor, in general, its stuffing and design practically does not differ from the previous model. Of the notable innovations can be noted only the appearance of the Touch ID fingerprint sensor and gold coloring of the body.

iPad Pro 12.9 inches (1st generation), 2015

  • Screen : 12.9 in;
  • Processor : Apple A9X;
  • Memory : 32GB, 128GB, and 256GB;

  • Model numbers : A1584 (Wi-Fi), A1652 (Wi-Fi + Cellular);
  • Connector : Lightning.

In September 2015, Apple unveiled the first device in a line of professional tablets that can handle many tasks previously performed exclusively on laptops and desktop PCs. The gadget received a large 12.9-inch screen with a resolution of 2732 × 2048 pixels, a 2-core Apple A9X chip with PowerVR Series 7XT graphics and M9 co-processor, as much as 4 GB of RAM, a smart connector for connecting an equally hey google configurar mi dispositivo smart tv keyboard, support for the Apple Pencil stylus and four speakers for better sound.

  • Colors : silver, gold back panel or space gray color, black or white front panel;
  • Model numbers : A1538 (Wi-Fi), A1550 (Wi-Fi + Cellular);
  • Connector : Lightning.

At the same time, in September 2015, the latest iPad mini 4th generation model was shown to the public. The gadget pulled up to the iPad Air 2 in terms of technical characteristics, having received an Apple A8 processor, 2 GB RAM, 8-megapixel camera. In addition, for the first time, the parameters of the case were changed (for example, it became thinner), which created a difference when buying accessories for iPad mini 4 and earlier models of the line.

iPad Pro 9.7 inches (1st generation), 2016

  • Screen : 9.7 in;
  • Processor : Apple A9X;
  • Memory : 32GB, 128GB, and 256GB;

  • Model numbers : A1673 (Wi-Fi), A1674/A1675 (Wi-Fi + Cellular);
  • Connector : Lightning.

Professional iPad in the familiar 9.7-inch form factor is somewhat inferior to its older brother in terms of technical characteristics. It was equipped with a slightly less productive specification of the Apple A9X processor (2.16 GHz vs. 2.26 GHz in the 12.9-inch model) and halved RAM module - two gigabytes vs. four. But the 9.7-inch iPad Pro is the first among all Apple gadgets to get True Tone technology, which allows the display to change the temperature of colors depending on the level of ambient light.

iPad 5, 2017

In March 2017, Apple again diversified its tablet lineup by offering a more budget-friendly option for users who don't need the features of the iPad Pro. The 9.7-inch gadget received a rather modest display matrix with a resolution of 2048 × 1536 (like the first-generation iPad Air), an Apple A9 processor (without the "X"), and an 8-megapixel main camera. At the same time, the device has added in size and weight, if you compare it with the iPad Air 2.

iPad Pro 10.5 inches (1st generation), 2017

  • Screen : 10.5 in;
  • Processor : Apple A9X;
  • Memory : 64GB, 256GB, and 512GB;

  • Model numbers : A1701 (Wi-Fi), A1709 (Wi-Fi + Cellular), A1852 (Wi-Fi + Cellular, Chinese market);
  • Connector : Lightning.

Apple engineers managed to fit the 10.5-inch iPad Pro into a case comparable in size to the iPad Pro 9.7, while equipping the device with a top 6-core Apple A9X processor manufactured on 10-nanometer process technology. In addition, ProMotion technology has been incorporated into the tablet, allowing it to achieve a display refresh rate of 120Hz.

A year after the release of the fifth-generation iPad, Apple has made a minor update to the device, mostly concerning performance. Visually, the tablet has not changed at all, but it has received a new Apple A10 Fusion processor, M19 Motion co-processor and updated graphics.

iPad Pro 11 inches (1st generation), 2018

Once again, Apple engineers have demonstrated their space-saving skills - with an 11-inch Liquid Retina screen with a resolution of 2388 × 1688 pixels, the new tablet fits into the case of the previous, 10.5-inch model, and even became a little thinner and lighter.

The gadget is equipped with Apple's top 8-core A12X Bionic processor, Face ID facial recognition technology (TrueDepth, Portrait Mode, Animoji and Memoji) and a USB-C port for charging. Separately, it is worth noting the appearance of a version with 1 TB of storage.

The larger model has the same distinguishing features as the 11-inch model. Here, too, there is no 3.5mm jack for connecting a headset, Lightning has been replaced by USB-C, the Home button along with Touch ID has given way to Face ID technology. The latter, by the way, implies the presence of another patented Apple development TrueDepth, which allows you to take photos in Portrait mode, create Animoji and Memoji.

iPad Air 3, 10.5 inches, 2019

  • Screen: 10.5 in;
  • Processor: Apple A12 Bionic;

Apple hasn't released an update to its line of "air" tablets for quite some time, taking a solid pause between the iPad Air 2nd generation 2014 release and the latest member of the series at the moment, the iPad Air 3rd generation 2019 release. Naturally, it makes no sense to compare the models separated by such a large time interval between each other, so we will only briefly dwell on the key features of the latter.

In general, the tablet is a hodgepodge of time-tested modules, compiled with the aim of getting at the output something between the basic iPad and the top iPad Pro. So, Apple iPad Air 3rd generation received the Apple A12 Bionic processor, borrowed from the flagship (at that time) iPhone XS, the design and dimensions of the device's body are indistinguishable from the 10.5-inch iPad Pro, the usual 12-megapixel main camera, 3 GB of RAM, stereo speakers are installed, support for the Apple Pencil 1st generation stylus is announced.

iPad mini 5, 2019

  • The screen is 7.9 inches;
  • Processor - Apple A12 Bionic;
  • Memory : 64GB and 256GB;
  • Colors : silver, gold and "space gray";
  • Model numbers : A2133 (Wi-Fi), A2124 and A2126 (Wi-Fi + Cellular), A2125 (Wi-Fi + Cellular, Chinese market);
  • Connector : Lightning.

Along with the iPad Air 3 in March 2019, Apple has also decided to reincarnate its lineup of compact 7.9-inch tablets. The iPad mini 5th generation inherited the design, screen and main camera from the previous iPad mini 4, released in 2015, but received a similar Apple A12 Bionic processor to the iPad Air 3, support for True Tone technology and the first-generation Apple Pencil stylus.

Thus, the iPad mini 5th generation has a Retina-screen diagonal of 7.9 inches and a resolution of 2048 × 1536 pixels (image density of 326 dots per inch), advanced for its time processor Apple A12 Bionic and mediocre, to put it mildly, 8-megapixel camera. By the way, the front camera has a new 7 MP sensor, coming in 2019 to replace the 1.2 megapixel module from the 4th generation iPad.

iPad 7, 2019

  • The screen is 10.2 inches;
  • Processor - Apple A10 Fusion;
  • Memory : 32GB and 128GB;
  • Colors : silver, gold or "space gray";
  • Model numbers : A2197 (Wi-Fi), A2200, A2198 (Wi-Fi + Cellular);
  • Connector : Lightning.

The budget version of the full-size Apple iPad 7th generation tablet was introduced in September 2019 along with the new iPhone models. As expected, the base tablet received a half-inch larger screen and the ability to connect a physical keyboard via the Smart Connector, but was clearly differentiated from the top-end devices by performance capabilities.

The 7th generation iPad features Apple's A10 Fusion processor, which debuted back in the iPhone 7 / 7 Plus in 2016. The capabilities of the chip are enough to work with most of the applications available at the time of release in the App Store, but today it is already considered significantly outdated. The screen diagonal has increased from the usual 9.7 to 10.2 inches, which had a minimal impact on the size of the case, the Lightning port is used as the main interface, meaning and the presence of a 3.5mm audio jack, the Touch ID scanner is used for user identification. Cameras have not undergone changes - on the back panel is located 8-megapixel lens with flash, and for FaceTime calls is responsible for a real museum piece - a front camera with a resolution of 1.2 megapixels.

iPad Pro 11 inches (2nd generation), 2020

  • The screen is 11 inches;
  • Processor - Apple A12Z;
  • Memory : 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB;
  • Colors : silver or "space gray";
  • Model numbers : A2228 (Wi-Fi), A2068 and A2230 (Wi-Fi + Cellular) and A2231 (Wi-Fi + Cellular, Chinese market);
  • Connector : USB-C.

The next spring update of Apple tablets traditionally went without pomp, especially given the coronavirus quarantine of 2020, and the main surprise was the absence of the expected Apple A12X processor. Nevertheless, a few pleasant surprises for potential buyers were announced.

So, as mentioned above, instead of the expected Apple A12x in both models of iPad Pro 2020 installed chips with a new for the company naming - Apple A12Z. Tangible superiority of this processor over the basic Apple A12 could not be revealed, the company itself only claims improved performance at peak load. A pleasant news was the update of the physical keyboard for iPad Pro 2020, now it has a full-fledged built-in touchpad, corresponding to the new features of iPadOS. Well, and of course, we can not fail to mention the dual camera, which also has a new LiDAR sensor that accurately determines the distance to the object.

iPad Pro (12.9 inches, 4th generation), 2020

  • The screen is 12.9 inches;
  • Processor - Apple A12Z;
  • Memory: 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB;
  • Colors: silver or space gray;
  • Model numbers: A2229 (Wi-Fi), A2069 and A2232 (Wi-Fi + Cellular) and A2233 (Wi-Fi + Cellular, Chinese market),
  • Connector : USB-C.

Apple's top-end tablet for 2020 differs from its 11-inch counterpart only in size and screen diagonal. The second-generation 12-inch iPad Pro is visually distinguishable from the 2018 model only by the presence of a triple main camera. The tablet has support for Face ID for user identification, a front panel without physical controls, a USB Type-C port and Smart Connector for connecting a QWERTY keyboard with touchpad.

As noted by experts, Apple continues to place great hopes on augmented reality technology and is testing new developments in this direction on a new type of processor Apple A12Z. In addition, for the same purpose was introduced a new scanner LiDAR, able to determine the speed of light and, consequently, a very accurate distance to the object within a radius of five meters. Among other updates it is worth highlighting the dual main camera (12 MP with an aperture of f/1.8 and 10 MP with an aperture of f/2.4) and support for new physical keyboards with touchpad.

iPad 8, 2020

  • Screen : 10.2 in;

  • Colors : silver, gold and "space gray";
  • Model numbers : A2270 (Wi-Fi), A2428, A2429 and A2430 (Wi-Fi + Cellular);
  • Connector : Lightning.

The 2020 update to the budget iPad lineup has been very minor. The main innovation of the iPad 8 is the Apple A12 processor. The previous generation was equipped with the Apple A10 chip.

iPad Air 4, 2020

  • The screen is 10.9 inches;
  • Processor - A14 Bionic;
  • Memory : 64GB, 256GB;

  • Connector : Lightning.

iPad Air 4 2020 iPad Air 4 devoid of the home button received a design close to the "prokami". Instead of Face ID as a biometric scanner, the tablet was equipped with a Touch ID fingerprint sensor placed in the top button.

The heart of the tablet is the A14 Bionic chip. The main camera has been updated (12MP and f/1.8 aperture) and the front camera has been slightly improved.

In the iPad Air 2020, Apple has abandoned the Lightning connector in favor of the common USB-C with fast charging.

The tablet also gained support for the second-generation Apple Pencil.

iPad 9, 2021

  • Screen : 10.2 in;
  • Processor : A13 Bionic;
  • Memory : 64GB and 256GB;
  • Colors : silver and "space gray";

  • Connector : Lightning.

The main visual difference from the iPad 8 is that the front of the silver and gold iPad 8 (2020) was white, while both versions of the iPad 9 (2021) are black on the front.

The main internal improvements are: an increase in storage (was - 32 and 128 GB, became - 64 and 256 GB), a significant improvement in the front camera (was - 1.2 MP, became - 12 MP) and equipping the processor A13 Bionic (was A12).

iPad mini 6, 2021

  • Screen : 8.3 in;
  • Processor : A15 Bionic;

  • Touch ID sensor : in the top button;
  • Connector : USB-C.

The iPad mini 6 is a completely redesigned "mini" with a new iPad Pro-style design. By eliminating the home button, the screen diagonal has increased from 7.9 inches to 8.3 inches. The Touch ID scanner has moved to the top button. The Lightning connector has been replaced by a USB-C interface. Both the main and front cameras got 12MP sensors.

The iPad mini 6 2021 received support for the second-generation Apple Pencil.

iPad Pro (11-inch, 3rd generation, M1), 2021

  • The screen is 12.9 inches;
  • Processor - Apple M1;
  • Memory : 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, 2TB;
  • Colors : silver or "space gray";
  • Model numbers : A2377 (Wi-Fi), A2459 and A2301 (Wi-Fi + Cellular) and A2460 (Wi-Fi + Cellular, Chinese market);
  • Connector : USB-C.

The main feature of both the iPad Pro 2021 models is the introduction of the M1 chip. It is the same computing module that was installed in Apple's computers released in 2020.

The front camera also received an update, receiving an ultra-wide-angle 12-megapixel f/2.4 sensor with optical zoom to reduce. At the same time, a new "Spotlight" has been implemented.

Both iPad Pro in 2021 received a universal Thunderbolt / USB 4 port based on the USB-C connector.

iPad Pro (12.9-inch, 5th generation, M1), 2021

  • The screen is 12.9 inches;
