How to know the version of iPad by model number?

In order to find out the model number there are two ways.

Method 1. iPad model number is printed in small print on the back of the tablet.

Find the "Model Number" line at the top of the screen. Tap on the part number - the identifier containing a slash "/", (e.g. MR7G2FD/A).

The idea of creating a tablet was born by Steve Jobs in the middle of the "noughties", but the busyness of Apple engineers projects iPod Touch and iPhone allowed to start its realization and release the finished device only by 2010. Apple hasn't released an update to its line of "air" tablets for quite some time, taking a solid pause between the iPad Air 2nd generation 2014 release and the latest member of the series at the moment, the iPad Air 3rd generation 2019 release. Naturally, it makes no sense to compare the models separated by such a large time interval between each other, so we will only briefly dwell on the key features of the latter.

In general, the tablet is a hodgepodge of time-tested modules, compiled with the aim of getting at the output something between the basic iPad and the top iPad Pro. So, Apple iPad Air 3rd generation received the Apple A12 Bionic processor, borrowed from the flagship (at that time) iPhone XS, the design and dimensions of the device's body are indistinguishable from the 10.5-inch iPad Pro, the usual 12-megapixel main camera, 3 GB of RAM, stereo speakers are installed, support for the Apple Pencil 1st generation stylus is announced.

The budget version of the full-size Apple iPad 7th generation tablet was introduced in September 2019 along with the new iPhone models. As expected, the base tablet received a half-inch larger screen and the ability to connect a physical keyboard via the Smart Connector, but was clearly differentiated from the top-end devices by performance capabilities.

The 7th generation iPad features Apple's A10 Fusion processor, which debuted back in the iPhone 7 / 7 Plus in 2016. The capabilities of the chip are enough to work with most of the applications available at the time of release in the App Store, but today it is already considered significantly outdated. The screen diagonal has increased from the usual 9.7 to 10.2 inches, which had a minimal impact on the size of the case, the Lightning port is used as the main interface, meaning and the presence of a 3.5mm audio jack, the Touch ID scanner is used for user identification. Cameras have not undergone changes - on the back panel is located 8-megapixel lens with flash, and for FaceTime calls is responsible for a real museum piece - a front camera with a resolution of 1.2 megapixels.

The next spring update of Apple tablets traditionally went without pomp, especially given the coronavirus quarantine of 2020, and the main surprise was the absence of the expected Apple A12X processor. Nevertheless, a few pleasant surprises for potential buyers were announced.

Tangible superiority of this processor over the basic Apple A12 could not be revealed, the company itself only claims improved performance at peak load. A pleasant news was the update of the physical keyboard for iPad Pro 2020, now it has a full-fledged built-in touchpad, corresponding to the new features of iPadOS. Well, and of course, we can not fail to mention the dual camera, which also has a new LiDAR sensor that accurately determines the distance to the object.

Apple's top-end tablet for 2020 differs from its 11-inch counterpart only in size and screen diagonal. The second-generation 12-inch iPad Pro is visually distinguishable from the 2018 model only by the presence of a triple main camera. The tablet has support for Face ID for user identification, a front panel without physical controls, a USB Type-C port and Smart Connector for connecting a QWERTY keyboard with touchpad.

As noted by experts, Apple continues to place great hopes on augmented reality technology and is testing new developments in this direction on a new type of processor Apple A12Z. In addition, for the same purpose was introduced a new scanner LiDAR, able to determine the speed of light and, consequently, a very accurate distance to the object within a radius of five meters. Among other updates it is worth highlighting the dual main camera (12 MP with an aperture of f/1.8 and 10 MP with an aperture of f/2.4) and support for new physical keyboards with touchpad.
