How to Replace an audi tt key case G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can start spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails the ECU will show a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and could indicate the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test as there are several pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms when it is in full operation. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were drenched in gasoline and the 4th was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I got zero Ohm. I'm assuming the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car can start when the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is plugged in, but still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, audi tt key case still shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not certain what to do, as i think i've pretty much ruled out everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to determine timing of the fuel injector, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you have a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause an engine shut down.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire in gear. If you experience any of these problems, it is likely your sensor is failing and needs replacing. The good thing is that they are very affordable and easy to find, especially in the case of the Bosch sensor, which is what we have. Alternately, GM's version this component is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a variety of issues in your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission in your audi advanced key, as it transmits information to the ECU about how fast or slowly the engine is turning. If the sensor fails, it could disrupt the performance of the transmission, as well as the other car's components.
